NEXT14 pitch winner to launch platform for cinemas

By the end of May, the new cinema platform Cinepass will enter the market by offering moviegoers a service for all film theatres in one city. The inventors of Cinepass won the NEXT14 Start-up Pitch Award this week, despite strong competition from all over Europe.

At the end of May the platform Cinepass will go live and has – according to the NEXT14 Start-up Jury – the potential to shake up the cinematic landscape. “85% of cinema tickets are still paid for at the counter,” says Cinepass’ co-founder Richard Ruben, hoping to change that with his team soon.

The platform gives an overview of the movies showing at cinemas throughout the city and shows trailers. Tickets can be purchased directly from Cinepass. It’s such a simple idea that it’s amazing such a service has not existed like that before. Starting this month, Cinepass will tackle the market in the German capital first. According to Richard Ruben, 30% of Berlin’s cinema operators are already on board. After a successful launch the team of four, who met at the Startupbootcamp in Copenhagen last September, will expand into other German cities, followed by the French market next year.

The NEXT14 jury, chaired by investor Morten Lund, chose the finalists in four consecutive pitch sessions. The level of the participants’ ideas was extremely high; particularly from the final four, which were 2GO Tablets from Austria, Argus Labs from Belgium and the Berlin-based start-ups OneLife and Cinepass.

The winner received a prize package consisting of cash donated by SinnerSchrader, dfv Mediengruppe and Startupbootcamp Berlin. In addition Cinepass won a Silicon Valley tour or workspace for three months plus coaching by Shira Abel of Hunter & Bard.

All four finalists, however, can feel like winners. Their great ideas convinced many investors who approached them directly at NEXT14. We wish them all the best and hope to see them again on the big stage next year.
