Optimisation is the driving principle of our modern world. We now can manufacture, transport, and organise things faster and cheaper than ever. Optimised models underlie everything from airline schedules to dating site matches. We strive for increased perfection and efficiency in our daily lives.
But how did a mathematical concept address such a cultural phenomenon? And when efficiency is gained, what is lost?
