Anjes Tjarks is the Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition in Hamburg, a role he has held since 10 June 2020. He holds a doctorate in Political Science and Cognitive Linguistics, with a thesis on "Family Images as World Views." Tjarks studied English and Politics for a teaching degree in Hamburg and Stellenbosch, South Africa, and completed his teacher training at the Klosterschule in St. Georg.

A committed member of Alliance 90/The Greens since 1998, Tjarks has served in various capacities, including as a member of the Wandsbek District Executive Board, Treasurer of the Green Youth in Hamburg, and policy advisor for the Green parliamentary group in the Hamburg Parliament. He was also Deputy State Chairman of the Greens from 2008 to 2011. Tjarks has been a member of the Hamburg Parliament since 2011 and was the parliamentary group chairman during the 21st legislative period from 2015 to 2020.
