Jeroen ‘JW’ Wijering developed the first version of his ‘JW Player’ – an open source online video player – back in 2005 while he was still a student at the Design Academy Eindhoven. In those days internet video was still in its infancy and video websites, such as YouTube, did not yet exist. However, with the arrival of broadband internet this would soon change.

The ‘JW Player’ was embraced by website programmers all over the world. Over the next five years the video player was downloaded millions of times and incorporated in countless websites. People all over the world now watch online videos on the JW video player without realising it. Prestigious websites such as Disney, Harvard, IMDb, Intel, NASA and The White House use the ‘JW Player’. Even YouTube ran on the ‘JW Player’ in the first 18 months of their existence.
