Maria Farrell
Writer & speaker on the tech future we really want and need
Maria Farrell has worked in tech policy for over twenty years, at The World Bank, ICANN, International Chamber of Commerce, Paris, Confederation of British Industry, and The Law Society of England and Wales. She has written for The Guardian, Conversationalist, New European, Slate, and Irish Times, and appeared as a tech expert on BBC, Sky News, NBC and TRT.
Maria’s viral 2024 article "We need to rewild the internet", written with public interest technologist Robin Berjon, was translated into three languages and selected for the French magazine Philosophie edition of key ideas for 2025, and will be published in the 2025 anthology, "Best American Science and Nature Writing". Maria's book "Rewild the Internet: This is How We Resist Big Tech" will be published in the US and UK in late 2026.
As a speaker, Maria has opened the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners in the European Parliament, and addressed the Royal Society, Chatham House, European Forum Alpbach, and NATO Cyber Summer School. In 2025 she has given inspirational keynotes on alternative technology futures at PublicSpaces, Amsterdam; Norad, Oslo, and RIPE90, Lisbon.
