Peer Steinbrück is a well-known German politician and the current candidate for chancellor of one of Germany's largest parties SPD. His political career began in 1969, when he joined the Social Democratic Party (SPD). After completing his studies in Economics and Social Sciences at University of Kiel in 1974, he worked at several German ministries and held various political offices both at state and federal level. Between 2005 and 2009 he was part of the German government serving as Minister of Finance. Since then he has been a member of the German Bundestag. In December 2012, Peer Steinbrück was voted candidate for chancellor of SPD for the federal elections in autumn 2013.
