Melissa Chan is a national and foreign affairs reporter based between Berlin and Los Angeles. She is a collaborator with the Global Reporting Centre and is also an editor and presenter at German broadcaster Deutsche Welle’s Asia news program. Previously, she spent a year working with The New York Times on projects focusing on technology, democracy, and global affairs and how these forces impact ordinary people. She worked for Al Jazeera America, covering stories in the United States on social justice, the economy, the environment, and the rural American West. With Al Jazeera English, she served as China correspondent for five years before her expulsion from the country in 2012 for the channel's reports. She has reported from around the world, from Cuba to North Korea, Mongolia to Gaza. She is a graduate of Yale University and the London School of Economics.
